ALLGEMEINE BESCHREIBUNG: The recently (2011) restored Velasco Hotel was built in 1902 by Luis Zorrilla Velasco, on what was then called Plaza de Armas. The renamed Plaza de la Libertad (Freedom Square) of Matanzas, is in the midst of its historic centre. The hotel's eclectic architecture with outstanding neoclassical elements, with marble, granite & precious woods, make it one of the most important buildings of the historic old city. The Velasco decor recalls the atmosphere of the salons and homes of the early days of the twentieth century, dominated by warm colors on walls and ceilings. The rooms have 1920's lamps and ceilings. The 58-seat restaurant, resembling a large terrace, is decorated with lush plants. The Hotel Velasco top floor has views of the city and the Bahia de Matanzas. The hotel is just 50 metres from the Sauto Theatre. Also neraby is the Museum of Pharmacy, a 19th century French chemist, the first in Latin America. The design of the hotel bedroom furniture, fixtures & fittings is inspired by the time of its founding, with the use of wood and bronze. There are a total of 17 rooms, including 10 standard single or double rooms, 4 Mini-suites and 3 Junior Suites.
